Feature Based Machining in Mastercam PDF Print E-mail
front page article text
Written by Derek Goodwin

In last night's class, we took a break from Multi Axis Toolpaths and had a look at Feature Based Machining. I think these toolpaths have the potential to be a game changer in our Industry

Feature Based Machining has been slow to gain traction in the Mastercam community, possibly due to the way that Mastercam marketed the technology. The famous "it's so easy a six year old can do it" did not go down well with the troops.

It's not that easy, you need to take time and care to build the FBM parameters properly, but once you have invested the time, you have a powerful tool in your arsenal.

If you haven't tried Feature Based Machining yet, invest a few hours and then make your decision. We need programmers to use the technology and talk about it, because we need Mastercam to continue to develop the technology and take it to the next level.

We will be back to Multi-Axis Toolpaths next week with video for building the tombstone and pedestal fixtures for assignment 8 and then on to 5 Axis toolpaths.
